The Basics

While not all roleplaying games use dice, the majority of them do, and not just 6-sided dice like you might have seen in casinos or games as a kid! In most ways, the shapes of dice used in roleplaying games haven't changed since the original release of Dungeons and Dragons in the 1970s.

As the chart shows, there are 7 kinds of dice you will typically see: 4-sided, 6-sided, 8-sided, 10-sided, another 10-sided die that has the numbers 00-90, 12-sided and 20-sided.

Typically dice are referred to by D followed by the number of sides the die has (with % for the 10-sided die with 00-90 since it's used to generate percentages). So for example, a D20 refers to a 20 sided die.

Sometimes games will ask you to roll multiple dice and typically will do so by putting the number before the letter D. so for example, 4D6 refers to 4 6-sided dice. Additionally, sometimes games will ask you to roll multiple dice and add a number to your result, which is usually called a modifier. For example 4D6+2 means roll 4 6-sided dice and add 2 to the result. This number will typically be compared to some kind of target number to see if you succeed at your goal.

Some Useful RPG Terminology

Here is some common terminology you'll encounter as you prepare for your first RPG:

Dungeon Master (DM): This is the person running the game - they will be the one coming up with the story or situation that everyone else is going to interact with. In games other than Dungeons & Dragons and its spinoffs, this is often called The Game Master (GM).

Player: Everyone playing a game who is not the DM or GM.

Player Character (PC): In most RPGs, each player will come up with a character that they control in the game - they dictate the speech and actions of this character throughout the game and use its statistics for rolls and checks.

Non-Player Character (NPC): Controlled by the GM, NPCs are everyone else you interact with throughout the game.

Skill Check: Some kind of check used in most roleplaying games to determine if character actions succeed or fail. Typically these are made by rolling dice modified in some fashion by a skill the character possesses against a target number. In most RPGs, the goal is to get over a given number, but in some cases and some systems entirely, the goal is to get under a number instead.

What Kind of Dice Do I Need?

Below is a list of popular Roleplaying Games and what kind of dice set you'll want for each, along with any notes we have.

Playing some game not listed here? Typically the first chapter will tell you which dice you'll need, or feel free to reach out! We're always happy to help!

Dungeons and Dragons (and D20 SRD)

Dungeons & Dragons uses a standard RPG set of dice: D4, D6 D8, D10, D%, D12 and D20. Because characters roll more dice as they get more powerful spells and weapons, you might want additional sets. Often a second 20-sided die is used for attacks with advantage or disadvantage.

Additionally, if you're playing any of the following character types, you might want additional dice:

  • Rogue: Extra D6s for sneak attack
  • Wizard: Extra D4s and D6s for spells
  • Cleric: Extra D4s for healing spells

Pathfinder (and Pathfinder SRD)

Pathfinder uses a standard RPG set of dice: D4, D6 D8, D10, D%, D12 and D20.

World of Darkness (Vampire, Werewolf, Hunter)

These games use 10 sided dice - you'll need 15 of them total, 5 of which are "Hunger" dice that should be in a different color or style than the other 10.

Call of Cthulhu

Call of Cthulhu uses a standard 7pc RPG dice set consisting of D4, D6 D8, D10, D1%, D12 and D20.

Cyberpunk Red

This game uses 4D6 and 2D10.

Shadowrun

This game uses D6s. You'll want at least 6 of them, but honestly, the more the better!

Warhammer Fantasy RPG

Magpie Games System (Avatar RPG, Root RPG)

GURPS

This game uses 3D6.
